Broken Bay World Youth Day Registrations are now open for young people aged 16-35 (at the time of departure).
Students aged 15 at time of departure may discuss with their school if they may be able to attend.
1. When is the next international gathering for World Youth Day (WYD)?
The next World Youth Day will be held in Portugal from 1 – 6 August 2023.
*(Broken Bay will undertake a longer pilgrimage/s through Italy and Portugal)
Full pilgrimage dates are 22 July – 11 August 2023 and will include travel to Italy and Portugal.
Direct pilgrimage option for over 18s, including CSBB Teachers between 18-35 yrs. Direct travel dates (Portugal only) are 29 July to 11 August 2023.
2. Will the Diocese of Broken Bay be sending pilgrims to Portugal?
Yes. The Diocese will be encouraging young people to join the Broken Bay pilgrimage to Italy and WYD in Portugal. Young people are encouraged to make contact with their school (if under 18) or parish (if over 18) to express their interest. To register, please visit https://bbwyd.org.au/
Young adults can complete the Expression of Interest form for either the full pilgrimage or the direct option (pilgrims must be between 18-35 to travel as a pilgrim)
3. How many Broken Bay pilgrims are we expecting to attend WYD Portugal in 2023?
We anticipate we will have four coach loads of pilgrims attend WYD Portugal. That is approximately 160 people. 3 buses will undertake the full pilgrimage – 1 bus will travel on the direct pilgrimage.
4. Who will lead pilgrims on the WYD pilgrimages?
Bishop Anthony will lead the Broken Bay pilgrimage with the support of the WYD Executive Team.
School staff, CSBB staff and Broken Bay clergy will make up a team that includes Bus Leaders, Chaplains, Pilgrim Group Leaders, Counsellors, Night Supervisors to care for our younger pilgrims.
Chancery, The Catholic Youth Broken Bay Team, Broken Bay clergy and other capable ministry leaders will lead the over 18’s on pilgrimage.
All leaders; Chancery, Parish Leaders, CSBB CCC and CSBB school staff wishing to apply for a leadership position need to complete an EOI application form. Details outlined below.
5. Where will the Broken Bay pilgrimage travel?
The pilgrimage itinerary is available to view at https://bbwyd.org.au/
At this stage the Broken Bay WYD23 full pilgrimage dates are 22 July – 11 August 2023 and will include travel to Italy and Portugal.
There will also be a direct pilgrimage option (shorter trip) for over 18s only, including CSBB teachers between 18-35 yrs. Direct travel dates (Portugal only) are 29 July to 11 August 2023.
6. How much does it cost? And is there any financial support for pilgrims?
The indicative cost (not confirmed yet) of the full pilgrimage (22 July – 11 August 2023) is approx. $8000 per pilgrim.
CSBB students may apply for up to $4000 of financial support. Please visit https:// bbwyd.org.au/ and complete the 2-step application process including: (1- an online application and 2- a written application) Students will be notified if their application is successful prior to paying any deposit.
The indicative cost of the direct pilgrimage is approx. $5200.
CSBB teachers (18-35 yrs) who apply for the direct pilgrimage (29 July to 11 August) may apply for 50% funding upon successful EOI.
CSBB Staff who are accepted in a leadership position will attend in a working capacity and their expenses will be paid by CSBB.
7. What will pilgrims be doing immediately following the conclusion of WYD week?
At the conclusion of WYD week (1-6 August 2023), all Diocesan pilgrims will take part in a short retreat before they return to Australia. This retreat will give our pilgrims the opportunity to reflect on and consolidate the fruits of their WYD experience.
8. Who will take responsibility for WYD Portugal in the Diocese of Broken Bay?
Kelly Paget, Simon Hyland, Patti Beattie, Scott Beattie, and Joshua Cotter are the WYD23 Executive Team for the Diocese of Broken Bay.
At the parish and school level, the Youth Ministry Coordinators, REC’s, youth leaders or designated WYD contacts are primarily responsible for the promotion and coordination of World Youth Day and its associated activities. Each parish should assign a WYD Contact who can liaise with the Diocese. The risk task group (made up of experienced staff from CSBB and Chancery) will manage all elements of risk management and will prepare up to date documents to present to Bishop Anthony and Danny Casey prior to departure.

10. If I am a teacher or leader at CSBB, Chancery or Parishes, how can I participate in WYD23?
CSBB staff, Chancery and Parish leaders can complete an expression of interest (EOI) to apply to undertake a leadership role on either the full WYD pilgrimage or the direct option. (no age limits or restrictions)
CSBB Teachers between 18-35 yrs may complete an EOI to participate as a pilgrim on the direct pilgrimage option only. Teachers who apply would need to articulate how this experience will impact their professional classroom practice in Religious Education. *(only teachers of Religious Education are eligible – primary and secondary)
There are some leadership roles that may be filled by non-teaching staff (e.g. experienced leaders). Any student supervisory roles must be fulfilled by an accredited secondary teacher. (all students travelling to WYD are secondary students)
EOI information will be communicated to schools. Staff will need to complete an application with specific WYD selection criteria. Bishop Anthony and Danny Casey will approve all members of the WYD leadership structure.
